Children and young people’s rights are outlined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These Rights, in addition to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, recognises that children and young people have special needs to be kept safe from harm and to meet their full potential. The guiding principles of the Convention are: 

• the best interests of the child should be the primary consideration.
• the right of children to survival and development.
• the right of children to express their views freely on all matters affecting them.
• the right of all children to enjoy all the rights of the Convention without discrimination.

When working with YNOT...

Young people have the right to: 

• Access YNOT without feeling judged or excluded. 
• Be involved in making decisions. 
• Receive assistance but not be pressured in a particular direction. 
• Choose whether or not to take part in activities and to have the decision respected. 
• Know how to make suggestions and give feedback. 

And young people have a responsibility to: 

• Be aware of and respect the rights of others. 
• Communicate openly and honestly.
