Rights and Responsibilities
Children and young people’s rights are outlined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These Rights, in addition to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, recognises that children and young people have special needs to be kept safe from harm and to meet their full potential. The guiding principles of the Convention are:
- the best interests of the child should be the primary consideration.
- the right of children to survival and development.
- the right of children to express their views freely on all matters affecting them.
- the right of all children to enjoy all the rights of the Convention without discrimination.
