Response to the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Bill 2013

Date: Tue, 29/10/2013

Introduction

The Youth Network of Tasmania (YNOT) is pleased to provide a submission regarding the implementation of the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Bill 2013.  YNOT has previously advocated for the introduction of working with children background checks in Tasmania as we believe legislation in this area is long overdue, and is needed to create a safer community for young people and to be nationally consistent.  YNOT agrees that the scope of this background check needs to be widened to include other vulnerable cohorts. Therefore, YNOT supports the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Bill 2013.

Given the limited consultation period, YNOT have been unable to consult with members of our board, other organisations or the youth sector at this time.  It is our understanding that further consultations on the risk assessment tool and the implementation of regulations will be conducted at a later date.  As time for this submission was limited, YNOT wishes to be involved in these further consultations, which will allow us to provide additional feedback on this important issue.  YNOT has had some discussions with The Tasmanian Council of Social Services and Shelter Tasmania and support the submissions made by these organisations.
